Paris Youth Foundation Interview

Paris Youth Foundation first grabbed our attention with their incredible track ‘Losing Your Love’. Since then, the band have released an array of singles, positioning themselves as one of the most exciting up-and-coming bands in the world. We spoke with the band’s singer Kevin Potter to discuss one of their latest tracks ‘London’, inspiration and more!

Your new track ‘London’ is amazing, could you tell us about the track?

Thank you. London’s a song about a long-distance breakup. I guess it’s inspired by the line in the verse “does London love you as much as I do?”. I guess that line says pretty much everything about the song.

It’s a song that focuses on the difficulty the distance causes during a breakup. Inspiration wise, I only ever seem to listen to The National. I think they tell the saddest and most honest stories and that’s what I tried to do here. I didnt wanna hide anything.

How did the band start out?

The band started in 2016. Three of us had known each other since school and we found the other two by accident really. We messed around and didn’t really expect much but a few weeks after putting our first song online we’d been asked to play Reading and Leeds festival.

What inspired your name?

The name Paris Youth Foundation comes from a piece of graffiti I saw on the underground in Paris when I was younger. I had no idea what it was, but I remember thinking it sounded cool so put it in my phone. I could never find out anything about it and a few years later when we were talking about band names it felt like a perfect fit.

Who are the biggest influences on your sound right now?

We all have different influences really. If you asked everyone they’d all give you a different answer. I think that’s probably the best way to be. We wanna be the biggest sounding guitar band we can be. Bands like Catfish and the Bottlemen and Foals are the obvious choices. Might be cool to say a band no one has heard of but, at the the end of the day, there obvious because they’re the best at what they do.

‘Losing Your Love’ is another favourite of ours, how did the song come about?
Losing your love is a song I wrote right at the start of the band. For a while we didn’t really have any intentions of releasing it but a producer friend of ours pushed and pushed for it. We’re very glad he did because it’s our most popular tune.

It very much fits into our theme of heartbreak and love and loss. Most of our tunes start with a phrase or a line and the rest of the song kind of follows. Losing Your Love’s line was “I loved you enough for both of us”. Once I had that I knew what the song had to be about. It’s probably our biggest tune on Spotify and in our live show.

According to Spotify, you’re popular in Germany! How does that feel?

Yeah it’s kind of strange to think there’s a lot of people listening in Germany. I guess it shows how great the internet is for showcasing your band, especially streaming services. It gives people access to our music in countries all over the world. Hopefully one day soon we will be able to get out there and meet a few of these German fans.

And finally, what does the future hold for the band?

We released our new single, ‘ ‘The Off Button’ on the 4th of May. We’re gonna spend our summer playing more festivals and recording new material. We play Y Not festival in July, we play the Saturday and Catfish are headlining so that’s gonna be very special for us. We just want to play as many places we can to as many people as we can. That’s our plan.
